Big Changes At The Farm

5/12/2012

We have been working hard here at the farm getting ready for the planting season. So far we have planted the onion bed, some seedling broccoli plants grown inside this winter and the tomato seedlings. We are currently working on a perennial herb bed near the new shed. Lots to do to get all of the plants in the ground next weekend! Looking forward to a wonderful growing season and huge harvest come late summer early fall!
Blueberry flowers! We are hoping for a fruitful harvest of blueberries- blueberry jam and preserves. So far so good, we may have to fight with the birds and other small animals for the blueberries!

This picture shows our greenhouse, complete with our new tomato trellis system. In the foreground of the picture are Sungold tomato plants, we are training the main limb up a string to the back of the greenhouse already, and we are working on the lower limb to be trained straight up. Hopefully this system will increase our yield of all of our tomato plants! Good for all of you who stop by at the farm stand!

The white plastic mulch was placed yesterday, while Ella slept soundly in her stroller outside the green house, Jason and I sweated to get the plastic just so! This mulch will help provide lower soil temperatures, less moister loss and better protection from blight, horn worms (we hate thee!) and other pests. This mulch also helps plants grow by bouncing the sunlight back up to the plants from the ground.

The New Garden Shed

The main project this spring has been a garden shed with a chicken coop and a complete renovation of  the front half of the vegetable garden. Below you can see the start of our new perennial herb bed. Granted, we are not finished yet, but check out the difference between last May, and today!
We need to build more raised beds, move the ducks, create more garden beds for summer and winter squash, and plant the rest of the garden- seedlings and seeds, all by next weekend!  Yikes! Check out our blog next weekend to see how we are doing!
