The Grassy Knoll Farm: The Germination of Seeds Spring 2012

The Grassy Knoll Farm's Germination Seedling Schedule
Wondering when to start your seeds? Based on our frost dates here in Riverton, and our experiences over the past few years, we have determined our seed germination schedule.

Our seed planting schedule:
March 3-4 Celeriac Root and Eggplants
March 17-18 Peppers and Tomatoes
April 7-8 Broccoli, Okra, Cucumbers
Last Frost Date: April 29
Plant Seedlings outside: May 20
We have already planted celeriac root and eggplant seeds, this weekend, tomatoes and peppers.  We decided to use a different seedling starter system to start the seeds. This year we are germinating the seeds in foam plugs suspended in a floating tray, then we will transplant the seedlings to seedling soil once germinated. In order to keep the seeds warm and moist, we decided to build a small greenhouse to start our seeds. We decided that the basement was too cold, and the kitchen, though sunny, could also be too chilly for our seeds, so we purchased new grow lights, and wrapped a metal shelving unit in plastic to keep heat and humidity in and keep cold drafts out. It is working beautifully!

I like the idea about the plastic to keep the humidity in and warmth. What plastic did you use? I have seeds under lights too right now. I did already start cukes, tomatoes and broccoli two days ago. We are moving and I am afraid that I will be so busy that I will miss the window. I have never grown celeriac. Very interested!

Melisa,
We purchased a plain white plastic from Home Depot to trap in the moisture and reflect light. It was really simple to set up- the big metal shelving unit definitely keeps everything nice and warm and for my wife's happiness, neat.
