On April 12, 2012 while Ella lay peacefully asleep indoors with her Grandma, we dodged raindrops and sleet to plant our onion bed. Earlier in the year we had ordered Red Zeppelin Onion plants from Johnny's Selected Seeds. Red Zeppelin onions are a medium to large, globe-shaped bulb with deep red color, well suited for long storage The onion sets come in bunches, average 60-75 plants per bunch. The onions will mature in 110 days. We ordered three bunches- around 180 onion bulbs. They arrived in the mail earlier in the day, so we decided to quickly put them in the ground! Jason fashioned our large rake with some plastic spokes to draw 1 inch wells 5 across for the length of the entire bed. Then we used a stick to make the rows straight across the entire bed. The look was very professional! The picture below is a vantage point that shows the rows down the bed and across, and also how the onions arrive as tiny bulbs. Check out our blog for more plantings as we move into the 2012 Growing Season! Good Luck with your own garden!
